Using wear know-how to extend service life

1. Wear basics

Figure 1 is a schematic representation of the wear model. The surface of the main body wears relative to the movement of the opposing body or intermediate material, as defined by load and motion.

Wear system (according to DIN 50 320)

Principle factors

  1. Surrounding medium
  2. Collective load
  3. Wear combination

Collectively, the Main body, opposing body and intermediate material form the wear combination, and the load and movement factors combine to form the collective load.

The surrounding medium must also be considered for the wear processes.

Verschleissreduzierung heißt die systematische Veränderung von

  • Wear combination
  • Collective load
  • Surrounding medium

using tribological principles.

Wear can occur in different forms which is why the different types of wear mechanisms are recognised in DIN 50320 (Table 1).

Types of wear

ABRASION MECHANISM SIGNS OF WEAR
Adhesion Erosions, holes, domes, flaking, material transfer
Abrasion Scratches, scoring, grooves, waves
Surface fatigue Cracks, pits
Tribochemical reactions Reaction products (layers, particles)
